Tax assessors evaluate neighborhoods or multiple properties, but are often mistaken for appraisers, who are actually focused on single properties. These professionals must analyze various properties at once by using computer software and must be knowledgeable of tax assessment techniques. They also have the responsibility to verify if property re-evaluations are correct. After this, they must inform the owners of the real estate about the results.
Training requirements for the position of a tax assessor are complicated and depend on the kind of properties evaluated and on the state of employment. Employers will look for candidates with at least a bachelor's degree or academic work in a relevant field, like for example computer science, business law, economics or math.
Every tax assessor has to obtain a certificate in order to practice. Most states do require an academic background and specific experience, but there are exceptions. The requirements can be participating in on-the-job training, completing certain coursework or attending approved academic institutions.
200 to 300 hours of appraising coursework, a bachelor's degree, up to 3000 hours of job experience and the successful completion of a certain exam are the required federal credentials. Besides obtaining the certification, tax assessor must continuously improve their education, in order to maintain their credentials.
