Adding Education to a Resume
Resume planning and writing needs to be done with a lot of care. After all, the entirety of your future professional life hinges on those few thousands of words and statistics. Speaking of statistics, here we focus on one of the most crucial parts of the resume, namely, your academic details.
Including Education to a Resume
Adding education to a resume is an obligatory procedure. Not only is it important to add education but in addition to that, know how to go about it in the optimum way possible.
Reasons for adding education to the resume
Education shows the employer a variety of things. First, it shows them if the applicant is the right person for the job and then it shows the area of practice and interest of the applicant. The applicant should take the following pointers and tips into consideration when adding education to a resume. First, the applicant should take into consideration the type of education that he could offer the employer and then to list it and explain it properly: GED, high school diploma, masters degree or other education. Every type of education can be listed in various ways.
Mentioning a High School or GED Degree on Your Resume
To a high school degree or GED, the applicant has to add the high school name, the degree, the years of study, the areas or the coursework that the applicant studied, the extracurricular activities and other different achievements. It is important to know the fact that when hiring someone, the employer requires at least a few years in college or there are some that require a higher education. If the applicant has for example a high school degree or a GED, then they must add as much experience as possible, and add achievements or extracurricular activities in order to become a viable candidate for the job.
Mentioning an Associate's Degree on Your Resume
If the candidate has an associate's degree, a 2 years degree, then they should include it in the resume but preferably mentioning a high school degree, especially if it was an impressive and popular one, for example, a prestigious high school. It is also better to mention the high school if this is focused on the area of work of the candidate. Here, it is recommended to mention the name of the degree, the school from where the degree was obtained, the courses studied, the years that the applicant attended to the school and other major achievements.
Mentioning a Bachelors Degree on Your Resume
A bachelor's degree is a four year degree, and here the applicant should mention the school where they obtained the degree, the years attended, the name of the degree, major/minor specialization and other achievements also worth mentioning. In this case, if the candidate also has an associate's degree they should include both of them, but the associates degree can be added in the second education section. The experience has to be listed from the most recent to the last one.
Mentioning a Master's Degree on Your Resume
A masters or a PhD in a specific field of work has to be mentioned as the most recent education. After this, it is better to mention and discuss bachelors' degree or other educational qualifications, except high school that is not essential to be mentioned here. It is good to include the area of study and the coursework attended, the period the applicant attended, the major / minor and other achievements.
Scores and Other Statistics on the Resume
Is including academic scores absolutely necessary on the resume? Well, yes and no. Yes, because having scores on the resume help the recruiting employer get a direct feel of the candidate's skill level in academic knowledge. No because if you have done particularly bad in one examination, you do not need to specifically mention those scores. Just emphasize on your academic achievements and feel free to discriminate between your different examinations depending on your academic performances in each of them. For example, include your SAT scores only if they are commendable or above average, otherwise exclude them from your resume entirely.
Adding education to a resume shows the employer the specific area of interest and practice of the candidate, his professionalism and dedication. The employer can also see the applicant's capability to successfully obtain a degree. It is for these reasons that the candidate has to properly add education to a resume so that the employer can see his achievements in this field.
